How to build a framed projection screen DIY

Instructions to build a diy framed projection screen with a 3,9 m screen diagonal (height 1,91 m, width 3,4 m). Building it yourself, you get a screen perfectly matching your wall.

A framed projection screen is possibly the best choice to achieve an optimal result. Building your own projection screen is the cheapest solution and it offers the possibility to use the available wall space in an optimal way. Given the flat and straight surface, the projection screen always has the ideal position in relation to the projector, as it is wall mounted.

To build a framed projection screen you need the following supplies:

  1. frame made of laminated wood boards. The length and width should represent the whole size of the projection screen including the frame. 2 laminated wood boards 2,05m x 0,20 m each and 2 boards 3,14m x 0,20m each.
  2. 8 screws 24 cm (not yet available in this shop but at the hardware store) (*)
  3. 4 Lamello joining elements (DIY store)
  4. Projection screen material DIY – available in this shop (for this screen size 2,25 m x 3,74m).
    How do you calculate how much screen material is necessary? (*)

To calculate the length: 1,91m (desired screen size) + 0,14m (2x7cm frame) + 0,06m (2x3cm thickness of the frame) + 0,14m (2x7cm to fold over on the back side) = 2,25m. Do the same to calculate the width.

  1. 1 frame made of velvet coated tape - available in this shop

In this case needed: 11,82m (2 x 2,21m + 2 x 3,7m). For those who don’t like a black frame, you can also use a brown or green one.

  1. 2 wall holder (see description below) -  available in this shop
  2. Plugs and screws for the wall holders (will be delivered together with the wall holders)
  3. Screws to attach the rubber band from the hardware store
  4. Rubber band to attach the screen material to board – available at any household supply store or at our shop.
  5. A cord and 2 pins to adjust the frame tape
  6. Another 4 pins to attach the 4 corners of the screen material on the board’s backside (*)

I used a frame made of laminated wood boards by a local carpenter. The measurements of 20 cm width and 3,0 cm thickness guarantee a good stability.

I also asked the carpenter to drill holes in the long sides and to mill tongues for the Lamello joining elements which allow to connect the 2 boards flushed.

Put in the 24cm screws into the holes on the long sides:

Connect the 2 frame components:

Then use a regular hole puncher to perforate the screen fabric and pull the rubber bands through those holes (this time without using eyelets):

Given a sufficient number of holes and rubber bands, there is no need to use eyelets. The screen fabric won’t tear!!!!!!

Now place the screen fabric under the just built frame with the bright side face down:

·      In order to get a flat and straight surface just pin the screen material upend to a flat wall for 2 or 3 days as it certainly will be curved after shipping. Do the same with the frame and the masking.


Now place the screws into the frame. The distance between them should be the same like between the holes. Don’t screw them completely in so you can attach the rubber bands to it.

Put the rubber bands around the screws in a 90° angle as shown on the photo. Thanks to this technique a frame with 15 to 20 cm width is sufficient. Cut in the corner of the screen fabric. After that turn the frame with the now attached screen fabric. Then insert the pins with the cord on each of the 4 sides at 7 cm away from the edge of the frame.

Carefully remove the protective foil from the frame tape and place it along the cord onto the screen material. Do so on each side. This has to be done with the screen lying on the floor otherwise the frame wouldn’t be straight!

Then cut the ends of the velvet coated tape and press them onto the screen backside.

At last press in the pins mentioned under 11.) into the 4 corners of the board’s back side for a better fixation of the screen material (see image above).

Now your self-made projection screen is ready to be mounted!

Attach the wall holder to the wall using the enclosed screws and plugs. Then screw the second board of the wall holder onto the rear side of the screen frame with the enclosed screws.
As the final step hang your newly self-built projection screen onto the wall holder.
